Honouring our Military History

This walking tour through picturesque Little Lake Cemetery features stories of Peterborough connections to wars including the U.S. Civil War, the Great War (WW I) and World War II . As you walk through the Cemetery, you’ll hear about the lives of people such as Colonel J.W. Miller, who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, was captured, exchanged and returned to defend against the Fenian raiders, and Commander Charles Rubidge, RN, Otonabee Townships’ first Postmaster, who commanded gunboats during the War of 1812. Of special interest is the story of Lt. Arthur Ross Ackerman who fought and died in WWI, but whose body was returned home by his family and has one of very few repatriated WWI Commonwealth War Graves in Canada.
