On the evening of Thursday, October 14th, 2021, Trent Valley Archives (TVA) will continue its popular series of Zoom talks with speaker Dr. Matthew Griffis. Entitled “Windows to the Past: Vintage Postcards and What They Show Us”, the presentation will explore the world of antique picture postcards, from collecting and preserving them to using them in historical research. With a focus on the medium’s “golden age”, Griffis will cover the story of postcards in North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the different types of postcards that were popular at the time, some key publishers of Peterborough postcards, how vintage postcards differ from historical photographs, and more. Griffis will draw from his extensive personal collection of vintage cards, particularly his view cards of Peterborough, Lindsay, and the Kawarthas.
A former professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, Griffis co-authored (with Elwood Jones) Postcards from Peterborough and the Kawarthas, published in 2016 by Trent Valley Archives, and New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards, published in 2020 by the University Press of Mississippi.
