Title: Sam Clarke Auction Sale

Creator: Cobourg World

Dates of Material: 1884

Physical Description: 1 newspaper sheet mounted on slab of wood

Scope and Contents:
Part of a page from the Cobourg World, 1 August 1884, has been mounted on a piece of pine barn board, 11″ x 22″. The key item is a display ad, 6″ x 7½”, for Sam Clarke’s auction sale, 15 and 16 August, of town lots in what is billed as the “largest sale of property ever held in Cobourg.” The lots are in every ward in town, but the list of properties is not part of the display ad. There are several news items and other advertisements on the page. Among the catchy ads are ones for Cobourg Carriage Works, A. Macdonald’s new veterinary business, Stanley Howell’s insurance office, and the sale of the A. C. Campbell farm at Harwood. The news items include notice of a picnic for the Civic Holiday, Monday, August 18 at Capt. Thompson’s Grove, Harwood. Three Seymour farmers were charged with watering milk and skimming cream. The contract for construction of the Brighton High School was let. Lightening struck the telegraph office in Port Hope. Haldimand Township is widening a “forced road” in the seventh concession.
