Scope and contents: The fonds consists of two photographs of the rugby team of the Peterborough Collegiate Institute, 1929 and c. 1930.

Custodial history: The photo was found in the former Lord family home at 192 Dalhousie Street in Peterborough, Ontario when a move was being made in August of 1986.

Biographical sketch: Albion Robert Lord appears in both photographs. Named after his grandfather, he was born on March 18, 1912 to parents Edward Everett Lord and Catherine Mauser and had three older brothers, Allen, Ross and Donald. The family lived at 192 Dalhousie Street. Albion attended Prince of Wales public school, and then went to the Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School. He played on the senior rugby team from at least 1929 to 1932, as his presence on the team is mentioned in the Echoes for those years. He played middle wing, and was small compared to some of his teammates, weighing only 145 pounds.

In the 1930 Echoes, he is described as follows “Ab is a middle wing man who won his laurels this year. The way he squirmed through those Albert College boys was a caution. Ab sings when he is feeling happy.” In the 1931 Echoes, it says “Ab though not very big was a tower of strength at middle wing and he certainly has the knack of picking the hole in the opponents’ line.” In the 1932 Echoes it says “Alby held down a middle wing this year. Although he is not as big as some of his team-mates he could certainly pick a line to pieces and travel hard and fast with the ball.”

In addition to his involvement with the rugby team, Albion was also active in other school activities. He was a member of the Cadets in 1930 and 1931, and played left wing on the school hockey team in 1932. He graduated in 1932 from the 5th form, and continued his education elsewhere in Peterborough for the next two years. In 1935, he gave working at an insurance agency a try, but had to leave the following year.

In the 1940s, he worked as a clerk for several local businesses, including Coca Cola, Genelco, The Empress Hotel, Capitol Taxi, and Kesco Electric, and briefly served overseas as a member of the armed forces during the Second World War. He continued to live at his family’s home at 192 Dalhousie, and never got married. He passed away on July 19, 1949 at the age of 37 after a brief illness.
