Title: Albert Hope Fonds
Creator: Albert Hope
Repository: Trent Valley Archives
Reference number: TVA Fonds 4
Scope and contents: The fonds consists of architectural plans and drawings, c. 1914, for a few houses designed and built by the Peterborough builder Albert Hope, together with several coloured plates and details that appeared in the Scientific American, Architects and Builders Edition, 1887-88, which were used for developing his plans. Clients included James McMilnan, K.S. Scherlies, G. Ruth, Frank MacDonald, Peterborough Hardware Store, Dr Hewitt Amys, and L. Yeotes. The papers have extra interest as the Scientific Americans were clearly passed on from another builder who had valued these materials. They provide insight into the ways in which the most ubiquitous style of local Victorian architecture was introduced and refined.

Biographical sketch: Albert Hope was born in 1879 in Wolverhampton to parents Alfred Joseph Hope and Mary Lester in Staffordshire, England. He immigrated to Peterborough in 1904 and began working as a contractor for hire, building properties for several clients in the Peterborough area until 1916, when he enlisted in the Pioneer Corps in the First World War. Upon his return to Peterborough, Albert became the first manual training instructor in Peterborough, teaching at several schools over the course of 25 years.
He married Frances Brown on October 15, 1906 and had five sons with her: Spencer, Earl, Jack, Bill and Raymond. The family rented several properties in town, but were finally able to purchase their own house at 219 Stewart Street in 1931. Albert was a devout member of All Saint’s Anglican Church where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent. He was also involved with the Young Men’s Bible Club, the local Boy Scouts, and branch No. 52 of the Canadian Legion. He passed away on September 16, 1953 at the age of 74.
Related fonds at TVA: There are several fonds at TVA with architectural plans related to the Peterborough area, including F250 J. P. Cahorn and F710 Gary Townsend.
