Biographical sketch: Sheriff Stan McBride was born in 1919. He was Peterborough’s best known Master of Ceremonies in the 1960s and 1970s, and this collection of popular music clearly influenced his delivery. He began his career working for Westclox, and then went into business as a service station operator. He was served as a city alderman for six years, and served nearly two years, from 1961 to 1962, as Mayor of Peterborough. He resigned to become Sheriff of Peterborough County, a position he had for over two decades, from 1962 to 1985.
Stan had many interests outside of his career in politics and law enforcement. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was very active in the local sports scene, and was well known for his athletic abilities in swimming, weightlifting and other sports. He was also a keen supporter of local heritage, assisting in many historical projects from the 1960s to the 1990s. He was inducted into the Peterborough Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, and Peterborough’s Pathway of Fame, honoured for his voluntarism. He passed away in 2005.
