Scope and Contents:

Series A: Upper Canadian Microfilm Collection, 255 reels, contains microfilms from the Archives of Ontario and from the Library and Archives of Canada that relate to Upper Canada. These include significant runs of several newspapers. The Toronto papers included the Correspondent and Advocate, 1833-1837; Colonial Advocate, 1829-1834; Mirror, 1837-1839; Royal Standard, 3 months 1836-1837; Canadian Freeman, 1825-1834; Constitution, 1836-1837; the Methodist Christian Guardian, 1830-1846; the Anglican newspaper, The Church, 1837-1843; and the Patriot & Farmer’s Monitor, 1832-1842. The latter paper was for a time published in Kingston. This collection has the files of other Kingston papers: the Kingston Chronicle, 1819-1832; and the British Whig, 1834-1838. For Montreal, Lower Canada, we have the files of the Montreal Gazette, 1837-1838; and the Montreal Herald and its successor the Montreal Courier, together covering 1824-1839. The collection includes the major papers outside the three cities already noted: the Brockville Gazette, 1828-1832; Brockville Recorder, 1830-1846; Bytown Gazette, 1836-1840; Cobourg Star, 1831-1842; Perth Courier, 1834-1842; Hallowell Free Press, 1833-1834; as well as issues from several Niagara papers, 1799-1851. As well, there are nearly complete files of the correspondence, Colonial Office 42, from Canada to the Colonial Office in England, 1811-1841; the records of the Upper Canada House of Assembly, 1825-1840; the papers of the Upper Canada Executive Committee, 1796-1841; the Peter Russell copybook, 1796-1798; and the private papers of Bishop Strachan and the Macaulay family.

Series B: Upper Canada Historical Documents, Digital Collection, 600 MB, consists of documents transcribed primarily from Series A.

Series C: Upper Canada Textual Collection, 10 metres, consists of research materials, including notably large file cards with handwritten and xeroxed transcriptions of documents related to politics and business in Upper Canada. There are also photostats of the Monetary Times, 1870s, and the raw data related to the analysis of assessment data and agricultural statistics.

Custodial History:

Leo Johnson, a well-known historian and former professor at Waterloo University, formally undertook the ambitious Upper Canada Documentary History Project in the late 1980s. The project was described in some detail in Ontario History and in other places. The objective was to create a data bank that would be widely accessible to all scholars and would prompt historians to check for sources that might otherwise have been overlooked. He worked in the technology of the day with personal computers, Word Perfect 3, and floppy disks. He gathered some of the most important documents on microfilm so that he could reduce his research costs by working at home. He was very familiar with the sources related to Upper Canada because he had written impressive local histories of Guelph and of the County of Ontario, and had been working on a never-published history of the Aboriginal people and their relations with British and Upper Canadian authorities. As well, he already had a large databank of material on file cards and built upon his extensive earlier research.
When Johnson died, his work on the Upper Canada Documentary History Project was abandoned. Fortunately it was recovered by Frank Lamoureux, the owner of the property on which the materials had been stored in an uninsulated shed. He donated the records to the Trent Valley Archives in 2004.

Biographical Sketch/ Administrative History

The Trent Valley Archives has rescued the collection by a variety of means, and with the extraordinary effort of countless volunteers. The entire collection was stabilized by its move to the Trent Valley Archives. As the collection had been stored in a filthy, damp, sometimes cold environment, the microfilm had to be inspected and cleaned thoroughly, and continues to be monitored; some reels were sent for professional attention in a Toronto lab. Some boxes were replaced. Every effort was made to retain the original film numbers as these were keys to retaining the information on provenance of the collection. Diane Robnik and Art Dainton were the key players in this effort.
The digital collection presented different problems, as the age of the floppy disks and the ancient version of Word Perfect presented some stability problems that were exacerbated by the damp storage system. We were able to rescue a very large proportion of the digitized documents partly because many had been made in duplicates with a view to sale to historians. The rescue of the digital information was led by Trent Valley Archives’ computer experts, Susan Kyle and Art Dainton, who were aided by Laura Monkman and Diane Robnik and several other volunteers. They copied the information from each floppy disk that could be rescued, and retained the original file structures and file labels. The most obvious duplications were avoided, and some labels were changed to more accurately reflect the content of the reels. The time-consuming work of saving the documents is still in progress. We have rescued the information from nearly 1000 diskettes totalling 600 MB. This is about 300,000 pages of information, which if printed out would fill the equivalent of 7 metres of boxes. We plan to identify what has been done, to compact the data and to publish guides to the materials.
The textual material also presented issues of conservation, pertinence and collections mandate. The archival decisions reflected the condition of the material, the subject matter, and usefulness to our holdings; much of the material was considered not worth adding to our collections. However, we did decide to keep several elements: notably, we kept the extensive note cards which are very thorough and often contain entire documents either hand-written or xeroxed. We did, however, consider whether the materials were at least somewhat connected to the themes, people, events and subject matter of the Upper Canada History Project. The key volunteers on this part of the project were Don Willcock and Alice Mackenzie.
We will make the information available to researchers in a variety of ways, and over time we will seek ways to continue, where feasible, the objectives of this project.

The lead archivist on the project was Elwood Jones.

SERIES B. Upper Canada Historical Documents, Digital, 600 MB

The most ambitious aspect of the Upper Canada Historical Documents Project was to produce digitized versions of all the key documents in Upper Canadian history. We expect to edit these over time but the documents are generally identifiable by source. Sometimes the files are drawn entirely from a single source, most often for sources found in Series A. Consequently, as it is by far the easiest source to access, it will prove invaluable on its own, and also as a finding aid to the microfilm collection. The titles are generally those adopted by the project historian, and reflect the purpose for which he might have copied the documents. However, in many cases, because the documents are transcribed in their entirety, they can be used for many purposes.

SERIES C. Upper Canada Textual Collection, 1970s to 1990s, 10 metres

Subseries 1. History note cards, 7 metres

File cards relating to primary research on various aspects of Upper Canadian history with emphasis on topics such as land settlement, taxes, government (including the Legislative Assembly and the Executive Council), politics, religion, militia, trade and commerce, laws, religious issues, Aboriginal rights and treaties, mills, canals, railways, transportation, social reform and other matters. There is material related to the career of William Lyon Mackenzie, of the Family Compact, and of land and settlement in the Peterborough area. The cards are filed in six inch boxes that hold about 1400 cards. Some of the cards contain clippings and photostats, and the cards are sensitive to provenance and archival referencing. Some of the documents are drawn from the sources included in Series A, but other sources are referenced.

The diversity in each box is perhaps reflected on summarizing what is in the second box. It contains information on bank shareholders in the 1860s, William Cayley’s 1855 observations on finance and trade in Canada, several documents from Edith Firth’s The Town of York, and various items from different sources about money, trade, transportation, that highlight the importance of the St Lawrence and the area between York and Montreal. There are also documents telling the early days of the Talbot settlement and the Glengarry settlement. The bulk of the documents are from 1801 to 1803. We will develop more detailed lists, but

This subseries includes the manuscript for Johnson’s history of the Indians; documentation gathered, primarily from provincial assessment records, with respect to his comparative analysis of agriculture across the problem; copies of articles and reports by historians on various aspects of Upper Canadian agriculture, manufacturing and the development of class.
