Scope and contents: The fonds consists of materials relating to Etta Lane’s involvement in the Federation of Women Teachers of Ontario, photographs and materials relating to personal trips she took, photographs of family and friends, correspondence with former students and personal directories, notebooks and diaries. Of special interest are letters from students serving in World War II, including several from Barney Danson who later served as the Minister of National Defense.

Custodial history: Donated by Elizabeth Hinton in December of 2015. They came to her through her husband, Robert Hinton whose mother, Marjorie, was Etta=s sister.

Biographical sketch: Etta Lane was born to James Lane and Emily Briggs on May 28, 1889. Her siblings were Millie (b. 1885), Mark (b. 1891), Marjorie (b. 1892) and Sydney (b. 1894). She taught school at Queen Victoria Public school in Toronto and became the President of the Federation of Women Teachers of Ontario in 1933-35. She passed away on February 2, 1980.
