Administrative history: The Farmers Advocate was founded in 1866 by the farmer William Weld, who felt that a practical publication that documented the issues and priorities of farmers was needed to help others like him succeed in the farming business. Originally published at his farm in Delaware Township, William moved the offices of the magazine to London, Ontario as its readership grew. When he passed away in 1891, William’s son John took over as editor, and when John passed away in 1931, his son Ernest took over. At its peak in the 1940s, the magazine had 200,000 readers. After a decline in ad revenue, the magazine ceased publication in 1965.

Related fonds at TVA: F614 John MacLean, has issues of another farming publication from the same time period, Farmer’s Magazine
