Fonds 176

Title: Miller Family fonds

Creator: James Douglas Miller

Dates of Material: ca. 1960-2007

Physical Description: 5 metres (about 16 feet)

Repository: Trent Valley Archives

Scope and Contents:

Papers relating to the Miller family genealogy, and papers relating to the life of James Douglas (Doug) Miller (1927- ).

The family is significant for its contribution to life in Peterborough. One family member, Finch William Miller, was the leader of the Peterborough Fire Brigade Band from 1874 to 1906; another family member, Walter Miller, was a hockey player; and yet another was a distinguished soldier in the Canadian army, from 1892 to 1940. Douglas Miller’s father was heavily involved in Lacrosse in Peterborough. Douglas Miller himself is an interesting figure, first playing Lacrosse in Peterborough and elsewhere, then forming a construction company that built many houses and buildings in Peterborough, Oshawa, and surrounding areas, then became heavily involved in Bowling from the 1960s to the 1980s, helping to promote it as a nationally recognized sport for young people.

Correspondence, genealogical tables, photographs and memorabilia relating to the Miller family and close connections to the lineage of James Douglas Miller.

Papers are organized in the following manner:

Sous-fonds 1: Miller Family and Associated Families
Consists of genealogical research material, including family trees, maps, photographs, biographical sketches, clippings, and other information relating to various Miller and associated family members, compiled by James Douglas Miller. Miller has also written individual and family histories, which are in several bound volumes; boxes 1-14, ca. 1869-2004, total 12 feet; 3 metres.

Custodial History:

James Douglas Miller has been compiling information and has been writing about his family as a hobby for at least thirty years. He donated his materials to the Trent Valley Archives in early 2007 when he was living on Tower Hill Drive in Peterborough. In late 2007, Douglas Miller moved to Norwood.

Much of the material (research notes, family trees, biographical sketches, photographs) was compiled in large binders, which attempted to provide (for Doug, and others) a kind of sequential order. The material was removed from the binders – and where possible, photographs were placed in protective sleeves – and placed in file folders. In general, most of the original order has remained the same.

In order to provide some archival order, however, the collection was divided into 2 parts, with subcategories. Therefore, Sous Fonds 1 starts with Series 1, which traces the Miller family members from 1720 to the present and includes some original photographs. After following Doug’s original order from the binders, his research materials, draft family histories, and completed family histories have been added to help show an organic progression in his research. Sous Fonds 1 then moves to Series 2, which traces the associated families related to the Millers. This series includes research material, original photographs, draft family histories, and completed family histories, and where possible, attempts have been made to show the organic progression of the research.

The Douglas Miller sous-fonds, Sous fonds 2, contains the papers of Douglas Miller, when he was not being the family genealogist. Included here are photographs, plaques, and awards. There is also a family bible, published in 1886, and owned originally by Finch William Miller.

Biographical Sketch/ Administrative History:

Biography of Douglas Miller:
James Douglas Miller Jr. (1927 – ) – known either as Douglas or Doug – was born in Peterborough at St. Joseph’s Hospital. His mother was Alice Mary (Ebbs) Miller (and his father was Thomas Douglas Miller (1904-1986). When Doug was a child, he lived on James, Mark, and Maria Streets in Peterborough. He has attended King George Public School, from 1931-1939, and Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School in 1940 and 1941. From 1942-1945, he worked with the Canadian General Electric Company, then moved to London, Ontario where he worked at various jobs. In 1946, he married his first wife, Marilyn Amy Taylor. In 1947, they moved back to Peterborough and he worked again for CGE. His first child, Alice Marilyn Miller, was born at Nicholls Hospital on 12 November 1947. In 1949, he and his wife moved to Grosse Point, Michigan so he could play Lacrosse for the Toledo Seltzers, and then in the spring of 1950, he coached and played Lacrosse in Windsor for the Canadian-American League. In the fall of 1951, they moved back to Peterborough. In 1952, he divorced Marilyn Amy Taylor, married Carol Colleen Smith (1934-2007?), and coached the Peterborough Lacrosse Team to the Provincial Championship. Son Bruce Douglas (1953 – ) was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital, followed late in the year by Carol Ann Miller.

In 1955, Doug moved with his family to Oshawa, where Thomas Daniel Miller was born v (1955 – ) and William David Miller (1957 – ), and where he formed Miller Construction Company, which built buildings in Oshawa, Whitby, Brooklin, Oakville, and Richmond Hill. From 1960 to 1969, he became heavily involved in the bowling scene, in the first and second Annual World Bantam Championships, then working for the Bowling Proprietors Association of Ontario as Executive director, founded the Youth Bowling Council and the Bowling Proprietors Association of Canada. During this time, he moved to Richmond Hill and then to Newmarket.

In 1969, Doug became director of Public Relations for Seaway Hotel Chain, then assistant general manager, and stayed with the chain until 1974. Daughter Anne Marie Miller (1971 – ) was born. In 1974, Doug moved his family to Scarborough, and from 1974 to 1977, he became Product Manager for Hockey Equipment and Lacrosse Equipment. In 1977 and 1978, he was the general manager of Seaway Hotels, then moved to Newmarket and became Director of Public Relations of Bowlerama Ltd. until 1980.

During the 1980s, Doug was the Director of the National Association of Concessionaires, President of the Bowling Proprietor’s Association. In 1986 he retired, due to an injury to his left shoulder, and moved back to Peterborough with his family in late 1987.

Doug Miller returned to Peterborough in 1987, and has spent most of his time writing and researching his family history. He has traced his family back to 1720. Doug Miller’s individual family histories are quite interesting.

Of local note are the following family members:
1. Finch William Miller, leader of the Peterborough Band of the Fire Brigade:
In 1874, his father James was persuaded to invite his son Finch, aged 26, to come from England to be the band leader for an honorarium of $50 a year. He was expected to work evenings and weekends. As well, Finch worked at James T. Stenson’s shoe store, 364 George Street and later at 417 George. Finch was highly rated playing the cornet solo, and had been immersed in local bands since a lad. Finch and his growing family lived at 339 Downie Street.

Finch had difficulties with the army officers in the 57th Regiment of the Prince of Wales Rangers band, and when his two-year contract ended he began the Fire Brigade Band. Many people, including Finch’s father, brothers and son, played in both bands. Finch conducted both bands until 1906.
The Fire Brigade Band competed against ten other bands at the first Canadian National Exhibtion in September 1879 and walked off with first prize. Each band had to play a march, a waltz and a selection; the Fire Brigade Band played “Ernani” as its selection. The three judges heard the contestants while inside a tent, out of view of the bands and the public. The Peterborough Band received 180 points, an overwhelming victory as the runner-up band from Orangeville received 130 points. The winning band was asked to play on board the steamer “Filgate” which had been chartered for the Governor-General Lorne and his wife, the Princess Louise. They played “The March of the Cameron Men” and “God Save the Queen.” The local press was effusive in its praise and hoped that Peterborough’s citizens would help it advance.

Before going to Toronto, the Fire Brigade Band gave a concert on the corner of George and Brock Street. Their selections included two quick-steps, a polka, a grand march, a fantasia, a waltz and a selection (Bleger’s “Rose d’Amour”).

The Fire Brigade Band also greeted, 21 July 1884, the first group of Barnardo Children to reach Peterborough. The band also played when soldiers departed for the North West Rebellion, 1 April 1885. Their selections on this occasion included “The Girl I Left Behind Me.” The parade route went from the drill hall to the station in Ashburnham. The story of this trip was told by Joseph Crowe, and was published in the Heritage Gazette of the Trent Valley. The band also played for the Fancy Dress Carnival at the skating rink, in February 1885. The Foresters attracted 1500 people to the event and some 200 were in costumes.

In 1906, Finch William Miller, aged 58, turned over the baton to Rupert Gliddon after 32 years as bandmaster. In 1907, he would take on the job as City Relief Officer, and would hold it until 1927. He was also proprietor of a shoe store at 348 Water Street from 1901 to 1917. He died in 1937, and the funeral was the largest seen in Peterborough up until that time.

2. Walter Miller, Hockey Player.
Walter was one of Finch’s sons, and had a distinguished but short hockey career, from 1904 to 1914. He first played for the Charlotte Street Methodist Church Guild team, from 1904-1906, then moved on to the Peterborough Intermediate Hockey Club, and then to the Peterborough Senior Hockey Team by 1907-08. In the 1908-09 season, Walter was called to the Edmonton Hockey Club, where he would play against the Ottawa Senators. In 1909-1910, he played centre for the Brantford Professional Hockey Club in the Ontario Professional League. In the middle of the season, he was injured – though not badly – in a Grand Trunk railroad train wreck near Guelph. The following season, 1910-1911, he played for the Grand Forks, British Columbia Pro Hockey Club. During 1911-12, he played for the New Glasgow, Nova Scotia team before being called to play with the Toronto Tecumseh’s. Then from 1912 to 1914, he signed with the National Hockey League to play for the Montreal Wanderers. Walter’s hockey career was cut short when he volunteered to fight in 1st World War and then was wounded in 1918 in the heel of his foot. After the war, he became clerk within the Peterborough Canadian Customs Office at the southeast corner of Charlotte and George Street until 1952. During all this time, he found time to play trombone in the Great War Veterans Band, Band of the Fire Brigade, and Rupert Gliddon’s Band.

3. Thomas Miller, Military Officer, Police Officer, and Carpenter
Thomas was another of Finch’s sons. He joined the Royal Regiment of the Canadian Infantry in 1892 and served 2 years. He worked his way to England in 1896 and enlisted in the Royal Scots Guards, with service at Windsor Castle for three years until being sent off to South Africa to fight in the Boer War. He stayed until 1902, then returned to England, where he was honourably discharged. He moved back to Peterborough, and then found a job in 1904 as Chief of Police for the village of Millbrook where he moved with his wife and his young son. At the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted in the 57th Regiment of the Prince of Wales Rangers. After the war, he became a carpenter for his mother’s nephew’s construction company, and as superintendent, supervised the construction of many homes and commercial buildings in the Peterborough area until he retired in 1940.
