Scope and Contents:
Three account books from the blacksmith shop of O. B. McIlvena, Warsaw, 1919-1940.
File 1 Feb. 1919 – Oct. 1924. Wagons, buggies, horseshoes, sleighs, farm implements, paint, welding, sharpening, and repairs. 1922 Entry for Alex Caulder indicates the sale of a “dog for sleigh” and “cough powder.” P. 115 also shows sale of “dog for sleigh” in winter of 1922. Most accounts paid by cash, some cheques and/ or notes. Several accounts show barter activity. For example, see Mr. George E. Moore, p.2: credit given for oats, wood, and potatoes. Tuck-ins on pages 15, 101, 157 are bills not entered into the ledger.

File 2 Nov. 1924 – Jan. 1940. Same as above, also sold gas and did work on cars starting 1927? Increasing mention of repairs to binders, cultivators, mowers, tractors, trucks, cars. Increased payment by barter, particularly mid-30s. Dec. 28, 1925 accepted a bow tie as payment from Charles Storms. 1926 entry for P.H. Lloyd shows “credit by horse” ($1.00). Dec. 1927, Arthur Payne credited $1.00 for “car hire.” Dec. 29, 1934 entry for John D. Sullivan shows “credit by goose.” 1931 entry for Albert McQuaig shows charge for a phone call to Toronto, $0.65. Feb 2, 1927, sold A. Sage “dog for sleigh” ($1.00). Tuck-ins on pages 67, are bills not entered into the ledger. Other: Dec. 1940 letter from Luther Payne noting error in account.

File 3 Aug. 1939 – Aug. 1940. Last volume. Only 6 pages used. No tuck-ins.

Each book has an index of names at the front. Spelling of names varies (appended files of client names show names as spelled in the index). Accounts show change over time in business practices of McIlvena’s blacksmith shop in Warsaw including products / services offered. Also shows increasing mechanization – from buggies and wagons to cars and trucks. Payment patterns show increase in bartering through the 1930s.
