Biographical Sketch/ Administrative History
The Holley family was based in Weston, Ontario over several generations. Joseph Holley, who arrived in 1827, opened a sawmill about 1/4 mile south of Lawrence Avenue. This property passed to James Magee, who operated a flax and saw mill by 1850. A large woollen factory was built there in 1853, and by the end of the century was the site of the Weston Woollen Manufacturing Co. (Patricia Hart, Pioneering in North York, 71). The land included 150 acres, which James Farr developed and was known as Farr’s Mills, later Weston.
The family at the centre of this album appears to be that of Joseph Holley Jr.
