Biographical sketch: Queen Mary School opened in 1913. King George V had just had his coronation, so the city’s board of education recommended that the new school be named after his wife, Mary. Initially it had twelve classrooms, a library, a principals office, a teacher’s lounge, a janitor’s office, and a storeroom, but was renovated several times afterwards.
In 1948, a new wing was added to the north end of the original building, accommodating five more classrooms, a kindergarten room, and a 392-seat auditorium. In 1965, a second wing was added to the south end of the school, accommodating a gymnasium, another storage room, a kitchen, another teacher’s lounge, and two more classrooms, connected to the main building by an overhead passageway.
The school is still in operation today (2022), and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013.
