Title: Gordon Berry Fonds

Repository: Trent Valley Archives

Scope and contents: Remarkable research collection related to all aspects of Upper Stoney Lake. Photographs (both digital and prints), research materials and correspondence relating to the production of the history of Stoney Lake book entitled Upper Stoney Lake: Gem of the Kawarthas. The research materials include newspaper clippings and brief written comments by people on the lake. Berry had several of the Roy Studio negatives printed as proof prints; this cost over $400 and very few were used in the book. There is a 1927 flyer for a pageant and a few vintage photographs in the collection. This is an excellent research collection by people who loved their subject.

The digital copies of photos, all TIFFs, are arranged by subjects.

Custodial history: Gordon Berry worked with Leslie Wooten and others to gather information on the history of Upper Stoney Lake, which was published in their attractive and compelling book, Upper Stoney Lake: Gem of the Kawarthas (Bridgenorth, Woodberry Publications, 2002). Gordon had digitized the photos used in the book=s research and writing, and promised to donate these to the Trent Valley Archives in 2004. The digitized photos, a proof copy index, and the files related to the production of the book were donated to the Trent Valley Archives on October 2007.

Trent Valley Archives publishes widely in local history, primarily in its Heritage Gazette of the Trent Valley, and one item from this fonds was published in November 2007.

Biographical sketch: Gordon Berry is a biologist and teacher who has written textbooks on biology, nature and conservation. He has been on Stoney Lake since 1975 and is a respected artist and designer.
