The fonds consists of architectural plans and drawings, c. 1914, for a few houses designed and built by the Peterborough builder Albert Hope, together with several coloured plates and details that appeared in the Scientific American, Architects and Builders Edition, 1887-88, which were used for developing his plans. Clients included James McMilnan, K.S. Scherlies, G. Ruth, Frank MacDonald, Peterborough Hardware Store, Dr Hewitt Amys, and L. Yeotes. The papers have extra interest as the Scientific Americans were clearly passed on from another builder who had valued these materials. They provide insight into the ways in which the most ubiquitous style of local Victorian architecture was introduced and refined.

Additionally, the collection might be of interest to anyone researching 19th/early 20th century architecture and engineering, as several items relate to John Belcher in the 1880s-1890s, who was a leading architect in the region.

Records, 1951 to 2002, of the Major Bennett Chapter IODE; Minute books and financial statements of the Catharine Parr Traill IODE, 1946-1965; and occasional records, 1961-1985, related to the provincial and national meetings of the IODE, together with information from other branches as received usually by the regent or the secretary. In addition to the many minute books, treasurer’s books and notes, the papers contain an extensive record of newspaper coverage, and many photographs of IODE events.

Particularly impressive are the records related to the annual Valentine’s Ball, 1954 to 1980, which contain correspondence and materials related to organizing such a major annual event. Also noteworthy are the ten scrapbooks, most with specially designed covers, covering from 1950 to 1965. Newspaper clippings after that date are done in photo albums or are loose in files awaiting someone to make a fancy scrapbook. The Osborne Photographic Collection includes thousands of positives and negatives (small, medium, and large format). These were created between 1971 and 1989 at the Osborne Photography studio as well as at other locations within the greater Peterborough area. The majority are colour although a substantial minority are black and white. The colour negatives are 35 mm, the black and white are 4″ by 5″. The prints are mostly 4″ x 5″ with some smaller and some larger. When the collection was accessioned in 2001-02, it was estimated that it contained approximately 30,000 negatives and 15,000 positives. The preservation project of 2013 is in the process of determining more exact numbers.

The collection contains many culturally significant pieces, most particularly portraits of prominent figures (and sometimes their families), Trent University and Sir Sandford Fleming graduates, and in some cases entire (or nearly entire) graduating classes from Civic Hospital (nurses), St. Joseph’s (nurses), and Eastern Pentecostal Bible College. It also contains portraits of police officers (local and OPP), young people entering the military or RCMP, church functions, passport photos of participants of a 1974 PCVS trip to China, church functions, businesses, retirement parties, Bar mitzvahs, sports events, entertainers, and even visits in the early and late 1970s from then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

The fonds consists of newspaper clippings, photos, posters, pamphlets, brochures and memorabilia related to the history of Peterborough and the neighbouring region and more broadly to heritage and museum issues. Highlights include the organization charts for Peterboro Lock, 1943 and 1946; an excellent selection of newspaper articles on local history; stereopticon cards from 1865-1870, excellent in all respects; and reports related to the Peterborough Centennial Museum, Hutchison House, the Peterborough Historical Society and the Ontario Historical Society.

Newspaper clippings and pages dominate the fonds, but she also included significant sections of the Peterborough Examiner which promoted local history. Notable among these are the tourism section, 22 May 1937 and 19 September 1956, marking the centennial of the Examiner. The industrial special “Peterborough Today”, 29 March 1984 was the beginning of an annual feature. Some items relate to Anne Heideman and to matters that interested her.

As well, she collected several featured series such as Elwood Jones and Bruce Dyer, Our History, 1987; and Martha Kidd and Jane Deyman, Around the Mall, 1969-70.

Research materials related to the Peterboro Relief Society, Anson House, and Anson House Committee. The papers permit the historical analysis of local attitudes and approaches to social welfare, poverty and relief for the aged poor, for a period of over 130 years. The papers, almost entirely bound volumes with some loose papers interleaved, consist of four kinds of records. First there are the minutes (files 1-26), comprising about one-half the fonds, which record the actions of the Anson House Committee, and its predecessors, from 1862-1994. There are significant gaps in this major series. That for 1869 seems to reflect poor minute keeping techniques. The two other gaps 1877-1880 and for the 1950’s, reflect missing books that might yet be found. There are also records, not nearly so complete, that relate to the visitors, and to the employees. (Mainly files, 17, 31 and 32). Thirdly, there are records relating to clientele (files 34-44). There are also miscellaneous printed items of which the most significant are the annual reports for the provincial department responsible for Houses of Refuge, 1886-1888.

Commonplace book (scrapbook of interesting stories relating to the life of two teenage girls in Montreal in 1825. There are handwritten drawings and maps illustrating current fashions, political cartoons, historical and political articles, all handwritten. As well, the later blank pages were used for a scrapbook on contemporary affairs in Canada between 1935 and 1945, made by Evelyn xxx, notably related to the Dionne quintuplets; John Buchan; and the lumbering trade.

Papers of John A.I. Young and his wife Mary (nee Baldwin); John’s parents, Louie Arrowsmith Young and George A.M. Young, his grandfather James McGregor Young as well as distant ancestor Captain Rowland Young of Nova Scotia.

Papers combine original materials including war correspondence, diaries (1902-1919), photographs, scrapbooks, as well as research notes and patents. Documentation of John Young’s interest in radio and wireless technology in the 1930’s. Other areas of significance include, Canadian General Electric, United Nations, the Unitarian Church, notes from University of Western Ontario (1940’s), newsletters from Leeds and Grenville News and Views from the Ontario Genealogical Society (1981-1994).

The collection also includes correspondence between Mary Baldwin and John’s mother, educational materials from her career as a teacher in British Columbia in the 1930’s, working as a dietician with the provincial government in the 1940’s, and as a participant in the making of Peterborough educational policy both as a parent and school board trustee.

In addition there is extensive research of the Baldwin family and the Huscroft’s, as well as research on the Merrill family, specifically, Helen Merrill, George A.M. Young’s longtime girlfriend. Other family names researched include, Burritt, Williams, Howe, Brown, Cooper, Orr, Rogers, Lyman, Lovejoy, Henderson, Ford, Landon, Thomson, Irving, Crandall, and Schofield as well as a large collection of OGS Leeds and Grenville News and Views (1985-1994).
